COVID-19: Advancing Positive Outcomes

These certainly are unusual and trying times, and I believe I speak on behalf of the SOA Board that our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this pandemic. We also want to express our sincere gratitude to our Members and friends who are fighting hard to defeat this COVID-19 virus and care for its victims.

Many of us are frustrated that we cannot perform our usual duties of alleviating pain and restoring function for our patients. However, for those that have participated in the fight against this pandemic, I would like to use this forum to highlight your contributions. I invite our Members to send in stories, links, or anecdotes about SOA Members, or friends, involved in the care of COVID-19 patients, policy direction, public education, or participation in any other areas to affect the positive outcome of this crisis.

We would love to hear from you at [email protected].

In this first post, we share with you a clipping from the San Diego Union-Tribune that highlights the efforts of Zachary Shinar, MD, the Keynote Speaker for our upcoming Meeting. Zack is head of the ER at Sharp Memorial and shares his thoughts on being on the front lines of the fight. At our 37th Annual Meeting at the Greenbrier, July 22-25, 2020, he had originally been slated to share his work on saving lives through ECMO in the ER. But, given the circumstances, we have asked Zack to instead talk with us on the awe-inspiring topic of caring for COVID-19 patients, which could not be more germane to our times. He will also speak to members’ spouses on household emergencies, which will likely include advice on preventing COVID-19 infection.

We look forward to hearing your stories and thoughts. And please, stay safe.
